How GST Works in Australia
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 10% broad-based tax on most goods and services in Australia. Businesses that are registered for GST charge GST on taxable sales and can claim GST credits on business purchases. The rate has been 10% since 1 July 2000.
Adding GST (Amount Excluding GST)
If you have an amount that does not include GST and you need the total including GST: multiply the amount by 1.1, or add 10%. So $1,000 excluding GST becomes $1,100 including GST; the GST component is $100. This calculator does that for you and also works in reverse.
Subtracting GST (Amount Including GST)
If you have a total that already includes GST and you need to extract the GST and the pre-GST amount: the GST is one-eleventh of the total (total ÷ 11). The amount excluding GST is the total minus that GST. So $1,100 including GST has $100 GST and $1,000 excluding GST. The formula works because an inclusive price equals the exclusive amount plus 10% of it, i.e. exclusive × 1.1 = inclusive, so exclusive = inclusive ÷ 1.1 and GST = inclusive − exclusive = inclusive ÷ 11.
GST-Free and Input-Taxed Supplies
Not everything attracts GST at 10%. There are three categories of supply in Australia: taxable (10%), GST-free (0%), and input-taxed. This calculator applies the standard 10% rate. For GST-free or input-taxed supplies, consult the ATO guides or an accountant.
| Category | GST Rate | Common Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Taxable supply | 10% | Most goods and services, clothing, electronics, consulting, building work |
| GST-free | 0% | Fresh food, most medical services, childcare, education, exports, tap water and sewerage, some medicines |
| Input-taxed | No GST | Residential rent, financial services (interest, credit, insurance), precious metals (first sale) |
GST-free means no GST is charged but you can still claim credits on purchases. Input-taxed means no GST charged and generally no GST credits claimable on related purchases. See the ATO: How GST works for the full classification.
GST Registration and BAS Lodgement
If you are registered for GST, you must report and pay GST via a Business Activity Statement (BAS). Your lodgement frequency depends on your GST turnover:
| Lodgement Period | Who It Applies To | Due Date |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | GST turnover $20M or more | 21st of the following month |
| Quarterly | GST turnover under $20M (most businesses) | 28 days after quarter end (tax agents may get extensions) |
| Annually | Voluntary registrations or eligible small businesses | 31 October (or tax agent due date) |
A registered tax agent can request extended due dates. Missing BAS deadlines attracts penalties and interest from the ATO.
